The Wonder of Opabin Plateau

This is an image I made back in 1991 of the Opabin Plateau area with Moors lakes and Mt. Huber in Yoho National Park ( I love that name ). It was one of those perfect early fall or late summer days in September, lots of blue sky with no clouds, the larch trees were a brilliant orange, ready to drop their needles at the very peak of perfection. On this trip I was shooting black and white film , 4 x 5, which is what I usually would be shooting , although I it was a perfect day for color photography and would have made some beautiful post cards, my vision was in black and white, I used a yellow #8 filter to slightly darken the sky but to also make the needles on the Larch trees almost a pure white, the needles being yellow and the yellow filter thus passing the color through, actually over exposing, giving me the balance of white that I needed to make a good black and white print.

If A Tree Falls.....

Most people know those famous words, I'm not sure exactly how the tree fell or if anyone heard it when it went crashing to the ground, in this case it appeared to me that the tree looks like it had been brought down by a wind storm as the base of the tree was snapped off, the tree then ended up in the beaver pond in Manning Provincial Park. The image was made with my 4 x 5 view camera and a 120mm lens.

The Beaver Pond

Here is a nice little tranquil little spot right beside British Columbia's highway 3 in Manning Provincial Park, the beaver pond is a quiet little spot to pull over and stretch your legs and take a break from driving, its also a great spot to grab your camera as you might even see a beaver. I made the image with my 4 x 5 view camera and a 270mm lens a couple of weeks ago while on a Canada Day road trip through southern B.C.

Spiritual Presence

I had this really wonderful comment to one of my older posts "The Bella Coola Valley" Sam went on to explain how the spiritual presence brought joy to his heart while in the mountains, I too have felt that same feeling on many occasions while hiking through mountain terrain and with my camera I have tried to 'capture' that feeling and the beauty of the environment although it's not always easy being a three dimensional object and fitting it onto a two dimensional piece of paper but hope is that the image will evoke viewer's memory and emotion, the ultimate success of a image.

The image posted was taken In Yoho National Park, the summer of 1991, 8 x 10 view camera ( Tachihara ) and a 300mm lens.
