Okanagan Mountain Park, April 2013
Today is a significant day for many residents of Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada, on August 16, 2003, one of the largest forest fires in the history of the province started as result of a lightning strike in Okanagan Mountain Provincial Park, the flames became what some called a firestorm, eventually consuming 239 homes in the south area of Kelowna, forcing thousands of people to be evacuated from the unpredictable flames. As a photographer working for the Kelowna Daily Courier it was one of the biggest natural disasters that I have ever seen or experienced, many of the pictures that I made during that time were published in many media outlets across Canada and around the world, including the book, "Firestorm, The Summer B.C. Burned" by Ross Freake and Don Plant.
These days the park and the forest is a much different landscape, as an artist during the past ten years I have photographed the burnt beauty that the park now has to offer. The images featured on this blog post are a selection of images that I have made in the park over the past 10 years or so.
