The Foggy Wild Pacific

A curtain of fog hovers over wind sculpted trees in this view from the Wild Pacific Trail near Ucluelet that I made with my 4 x 5 view camera and a 120mm lens this past October. I had been in the area for several days and had weather that ranged from sun and clouds to rain and on the day I was leaving, fog. As 2006 draws to a close I wish everyone reading this blog the very best for 2007!

Bridge Over Calm Waters

At this time of the year when everyone is busy hustling and bustling to and fro trying to get everything done before the big day I try to take some time out to get out and enjoy the peace and quiet of nature, sometimes its just a snow shoe walk on a trail not far from my home or a visit to the edge of Okanagan lake, remarkably the parks and trails are usually devoid of people. The photograph posted, made with my 4 x 5 view camera and a 120mm lens, is from Noyse lake on the Kludahk trail back in October of this year, I enjoyed a fine day of hiking with family members with brilliant blue skies and the lingering warmth of a summer sun. There is a mood of tranquility and peacefulness that I tried to capture in the photographs I made of the jewel like lake on that day and that I can later reflect upon.

Shadow On The Port Side

I have had the opportunity on a several occasions to photograph inside Cowichan Shipyard in Cowichan Bay on Vancouver Island, this 100 year old building has been used to build and repair wooden boats and is still in use. The building has large windows which makes for some very nice light and gives the impression of a cathedral like feel, as it has very high ceilings to accommodate boat with tall structures. I made this image of a shadow of a window falling onto the side of a boat with my 4 x 5 view camera and a 120mm lens.

The Old Tattered Box

This is another from my series of images that I made last month at Monashee Manufacturing, while wandering around the old building I spotted this old box full of springs that I thought would make for and interesting photograph, which I made with my 4 x 5 view camera and a 190mm lens.

Nightshift at Monashee

Monashee Manufacturing in Kelowna is a buzz of activity with workers constructing metal projects around the clock. I made this image of the building last week at the end of a snow storm late in the afternoon with the temperature hovering around -20C certainly not cold by the standards of some parts of the country but cold enough while making exposures with my view camera to make it a challenge. I used my Tachihara 8 x 10 camera with a 5 x 7 reducing back and a 270mm lens, exposure times were in the range of 30 seconds to one minute at either f 22 or f32. For the past few weeks or so I have been making photographs of the inside of the old machine shop and I was looking to make a nice image of the outside, I had noticed it had a real "warm" feeling with the light emanating from the windows within.
