Tribute to Tribune Bay

I am starting to scan in some of the images I made on a recent road trip to B.C.'s Sunshine Coast and beyond back in June of this year. One of the places I stopped at was Hornby Island, a small little Island about a third of the way up along side Vancouver Island, to get there I took a ferry from Vancouver Island ( south of Comox ) to Denman Island then another ferry from Denman to Hornby Island. I mostly photographed around Tribune Bay Provincial Park, this park has a long beautiful sandy beach and at low tide, I found many interesting seaweed covered rocks that made for interesting photographs. June was a nice time to photograph, school was not yet out, which meant that the park was not too busy with crowds of people and the days were long providing me with plenty of light to make pictures.

Majesty Of Skaha Bluffs

Another favourite area that I like to photograph is Skaha Bluffs, near Penticton B.C. The bluffs is a popular rock climbing area for people who love to scramble up the coarse-grained gneiss walls up to 80 meters tall. Though the climbers are well above me I prefer though to stay at the bottom on the canyon trails with my 4 x 5 view camera and try and capture the majesty of the rock walls. The canyon walls and the color of the rock translates well into black and white, its especially nice in the late summer and early fall with late afternoon light. This is a image that I took as usual with my 4 x 5 view camera and the 120 mm lens.

An Ocean View

These days real estate prices are going sky high and anything with a "view" is worth even more, but my "views" which some would say are priceless are from the various parks that I visit during my travels around Western Canada and at home here. I appreciate the fact that I can lace up my hiking boots grab my camera and head out into the outdoors and find these incredibly wonderful scenes that some people would pay millions of dollars for to have as their own private view. Through my pictures I try to share my "views" that I see along the way and try to be a good steward of the land and hope that the views that I experience will be seen by future generations to come. This photo was taken at Cape Scott Provincial park in June of 1995 with my Tachihara 4 x 5 view camera and a 120 mm lens.

Dancing Clouds

This is an image that I shot a month or so ago on Pincushion Ridge, I had a particularly good evening on this occasion with thunder storms and beautiful dancing clouds that were moving all around me with such incredible form. I must say that I rarely make landscape pictures unless I have some nice clouds to work with, it ads so much drama and perspective to my images. Quite often when the skies are clear with no clouds people will mention how beautiful it is for photography, when its cloudy and they see me taking pictures they ask why I would want to make pictures on such a dull day. For me the silver lining really are in the clouds because of how they transform my images and give them a spiritual glow.

Up On The Ridge

Here is another image from the Pincushion Ridge area, I liked the old fallen tree which I thought added a lot of character to the photograph. Image was made with a 120mm lens on my 4 x 5 view camera.

As The Sun Dipped Down

This is an image I made with my 4 x 5 view camera about a month ago looking toward Pincushion Ridge near Peachland B.C. just as the sun was dipping down below the horizon of the ridge on a beautiful summer Okanagan day. The longer summer days have provided me with extra time to get out and make pictures as I have have tried to find locations close by that I can zip out to on a moments notice. I often find getting my self motivated is half the battle in making good pictures, especially when photographing in one's backyard so to speak, when I'm away from home its easier to find things to photograph because I'm motivated by the fact that I might not be in this particular area for a while or ever in some cases. Although I only spent a hour or two on this particular day and made a number of other images it was well worth the effort.
